Frank Silvera was a Jamaican-American who had a very fruitful career for a person of color during his era in theater and film. In 1964, Silvera and Vantile Whitfield founded the Theatre of Being, a Los Angeles-based theatre dedicated to providing black actors with non-stereotypical roles.
His concept of "being" is defined as spiritual completion; to lack no essential characteristic. It is the belief that everything you need to fulfill your character, already exists inside of you. It is a concept and style that delves into the actor discovering and embracing one's self and bringing all that he or she is to the character and trusting in that discovery.
